The most gratifying endorsement of Julio Rodriguez’s legendary 2022 came on Monday when he was named the winner of the Jackie Robinson American League Rookie of the Year Award.
Rodrguez, who also won the AL Silver Slugger Award and was selected for the All-Star Game, became the ninth position player to win all three awards in the same year.
Along with Neftali Felix (2010), Hanley Ramirez (2006), Angel Berroa (2003), Albert Pujols (2001), Rafael Furcal (2000), Raul Mondesi (1994), and Alfredo Griffin, Rodriguez is the ninth player of Dominican descent to win the Rookie of the Year Award in either league (1979).
The 21-year-old Rodriguez, whose birthday isn’t until December 29, led all rookies in almost every offensive metric, such as home runs (28), Wins
Above Replacement (6.0 per Baseball-Reference and 5.3 by FanGraphs), OPS (.854), wRC+ (146), and total bases (260). He finished third in hits, but second in slugging percentage (.509), RBIs (75), runs scored (84) and stolen bases (25) (145).
Rodrguez surpassed Mike Trout (128) who was the American League Rookie of the Year in 2012 and has since won the league’s MVP Award three times by becoming the first player with at least 25 home runs and 25 stolen bases in a single season.
He also did so the fastest (125 career games). Last Thursday, Aaron Judge, Rodriguez, and Trout were all declared winners of the AL Silver Slugger Award for the outfield.
